What is a good tour company to travel to New York with?

Hi. I am wanting to take a good comprehensive tour of New York City. I am 17 years old. I was considering one from Smithsonian Student Travel (http://www.smithsonianstudenttravel.com/student-tours/touritinerary.aspx?tourcode=NNX&touryear=2011). I would like a tour similar to this one where I do not have to travel in large groups. I have thought about Monograms travel already. Any other suggestions regarding companies or escorted tours?

Does it have to be an organized tour with a group? Or do you have your own group? Try New York Guest– they are based right in the heart of the city and are local New Yorkers. They work with groups and individuals and can offer suggestions for every budget. Check them out at newyorkguest.com.

25 Bicycle Tours in the Lake Champlain Region: Scenic Tours in Vermont, New York, and Quebec

$8.41

A guide to the premier cycling destination in New England, a region of outstanding scenery, with lightly traveled, good quality roads, attractive and historic towns and villages, friendly residents, and a range of lodging and dining options. This book offers rides over the entire Lake Champlain region, from the southern tip of the lake at the birthplace of the U.S. Navy in Whitehall, New York, to its northernmost bay in Quebec, west to Lake Placid and extending east to the charming college town of Middlebury. Charles Hansen, who has been riding and organizing bicycle tours in the area for two decades, has researched and ridden these routes to create a book that will serve all cyclists—from the hardcore roadie who wants the challenge of an 82-mile ride through the eastern Adirondacks, to the casual rider or family looking for a scenic and largely flat afternoon outing. Several multiple day-tours are described, including the Lake Placid Weekender that starts from Burlington and provides a highly scenic and satisfying two-day ride for touring cyclists. Route notes are provided for The Grand Tour, a nine-day circumnavigation of the entire lake with a rest day in Montreal, as well as shorter variations on this tour. From 25 Bicycle Tours in the Lake Champlain Region you’ll learn much about the rich history of the region as well as find out about tourism organizations, lodging, museums, and attractions along the way. 30 black & white photos, 25 maps. Author Biography: Charles Hansen has been leading bicycle tours for many years. In 2000 he organized an “End to End” tour cycling over 1,200 miles across the length of Great Britain, from Land’s End in Cornwall to John O’Groats in Scotland. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

 Adirondack Home

Adirondack Home

$19.99

Home ReferenceRalph Kylloe explores the classic style and detailing of Adirondack home design from both a historic and contemporary perspective. He shows us traditional style as well as contemporary interpretations of home design and décor in the style that made “great camps” an icon of vacation living and outdoor relaxation. Through personal tours of a ten Adirondack-style homes, from boat houses overhanging the lake, to riverside cabins, camps in the pines, and even the grandest of historic great camps-Top Ridge, Kylloe gives a sound if abbreviated history of New York’s Adirondacks. From prehistory through the advent of wilderness recreation and outdoor living, the lifestyle that brought generations of vacationers to the lakes and mountains of upstate New York has much more influence today than as geographic region. Adirondack has become an enduring style, rich with furnishings handcrafted from indigenous materials. Birch bark veneer on bureaus, chests of drawers, lampshades, mirror frames, and more is the most readily identified icon of Adirondack style. The application of twigs in geometric or mosaic patterns is emulated all over the country. For cabin or camp, vacation house or permanent residence, the spirit of the Adirondacks is the epitome of mountain living. Ralph Kylloe’s love for the region informs his brilliant photography and pithy commentary.

Excerpt: Tekserve – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Tekserve founders David Lerner and Dick Demenus met at the New York City public FM radio station WBAI in 1970, and with engineer Mike Edl set up shop together late in the decade under the name Current Designs Corporation. Their business was electronic engineering and industrial design. They manufactured the indestructible music listening stations to be found at the Lincoln Center branch of the New York Public Library, and early models of the audio listening tours now found in many art museums. “We bought the very first Mac that came out in 1984 for $3,000, and we fell in love with it.” Demenus says, “Weve been loyal ever since.” As Macintosh users and electrical engineers, the Current Designs partners found themselves uniquely qualified to fix their own Macs when they started to malfunction. Tekserve was formed as a “sister company under the same roof” dedicated to servicing Macintosh computers and became Apple-authorized for repair in 1993. Tekserve has occupied four locations on the same side of the same block in Chelsea: a 3,000 foot loft at 115 West 23rd Street; another loft at 163 West 23rd Street (the “Traffic Building”); a larger space on the fourth floor of 155 West 23rd Street, and later expansions to the third floor. In June 2002, the company moved to its present 25,000 square foot storefront location at 119 West 23rd Street, occupying the entire first floor of the Printing Arts Building (which extends through to 24th street). The first three locations were notable for their eccentric decor, including an antique ten-cent Coke machine and a porch swing. The Coke machine remains at the 119 West 23rd Street location, but the porch swing was retired due to the newest space’s s… More:

Best American Science Writing 2003

$0.99

In his introduction to The Best American Science Writing 2003, Dr. Oliver Sacks, whom the New York Times has called “the poet laureate of medicine,” writes that “the best science writing … cannot be completely ‘objective’ — how can it be when science itself is so human an activity? — but it is never self-indulgently subjective either. It is, at best, a wonderful fusion, as factual as a news report, as imaginative as a novel.” It is with this definition of “good” science writing in mind that Dr. Sacks has selected the twenty-five extraordinary pieces that make up the latest installment of this acclaimed annual. This year, Peter Canby travels into the heart of remote Africa to track a remarkable population of elephants; Atul Gawande shows us the way doctors learn their skills by performing supposedly routine procedures on unsuspecting patients. With candor and tenderness, Floyd Skloot observes the toll Alzheimer’s disease is taking on his ninety-one-year-old mother, and is fascinated by the memories she retains. Marcelo Gleiser asks: If we are the universe’s sole intelligent species, then what must we do to be good citizens of the cosmos? Natalie Angier writes about the challenge of traveling to distant stars. Gunjan Sinha explores the mating behavior of the common prairie vole and what it reveals about the human pattern of monogamy. Michael Klesius attempts to solve what Darwin called “an abominable mystery”: How did flowers originate? Lawrence Osborne tours a farm where a genetically modified goat produces the silk of spiders in its milk. Joseph D’Agnese visits a home for retired medical research chimps. And in the collection’s final piece, Richard C. Lewontin andRichard Levins reflect on how the work of Stephen Jay Gould demonstrated the value of taking a radical approach to science. As this series firmly attests, science writing has achieved a central place in our culture, and one can posit that the reason why has to do with the special thrill

Billie Holiday (1915-1959), the legendary jazz singer whose vocal stylings were deeply affecting, continues to enthrall. This biography conveys her hard-luck youth, career triumphs, and then decline and early death. At age 14, despite growing up with an absentee musician father, little schooling, a rape at 10, and jail time for prostitution, this extraordinary girl moved to New York City to find work as a dancer or singer. She soon became the toast of Harlem and went on to tour and record with the biggest names in jazz.Holiday’s career took off in the 1930s, during the Depression, and the biography evokes the era and atmosphere of the jazz club scene. The state of race relations in the country is discussed as Holiday tours with white bandleaders such as Artie Shaw and even as she sings about lynching in the controversial Strange Fruit. The narrative further chronicles Holiday’s relationships, descent into drug addiction, the subsequent diminishment of her talent, and tragic early death. Chess Artist: Genius, Obsession, and the World's Oldest Game

Chess Artist: Genius, Obsession, and the World’s Oldest Game

$0.99

In the tiny Russian province of Kalmykia, obsession with chess has reached new heights. Its leader, a charismatic and eccentric millionaire/ex—car salesman named Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is a former chess prodigy and the most recent president of FIDE, the world’s controlling chess body. Despite credible allegations of his involvement in drug running, embezzlement, and murder, the impoverished Kalmykian people have rallied around their leader’s obsession—-chess is played on Kalmykian prime-time television and is compulsory in Kalmykian schools. In addition, Kalmyk women have been known to alter their traditional costumes of pillbox hats and satin gowns to include chessboard-patterned sashes. The Chess Artist is both an intellectual journey and first-rate travel writing dedicated to the love of chess and all of its related oddities, writer and chess enthusiast J. C. Hallman explores the obsessive hold chess exerts on its followers by examining the history and evolution of the game and the people who dedicate their lives to it. Together with his friend Glenn Umstead, an African-American chessmaster who is arguably as chess obsessed as Ilyumzhinov, Hallman tours New York City’s legendary chess district, crashes a Princeton Math Department game party, challenges a convicted murderer to a chess match in prison, and travels to Kalmykia, where they are confronted with members of the Russian intelligence service, beautiful translators who may be spies, seven-year-old chess prodigies, and the sad blight of a land struggling toward capitalism. In the tradition of The Professor and the Madman, Longitude, and The Orchid Thief, Hallman transforms an obsessive quest for obscure things into a compulsively readable and entertaining weaving of travelogue, journalism, and chess history.

Chicago's Urban Nature: A Guide to the City's Architecture + Landscape

Chicago’s Urban Nature: A Guide to the City’s Architecture + Landscape

$20

Travel Chicago, whose motto is “City in a Garden,” is at the forefront of a global urban greening movement. In Chicago’s Urban Nature, Sally A. Kitt Chappell provides a beautiful guide to the city’s stunning blend of nature and architecture.            At the heart of this urban movement is the idea of connection, bringing buildings and landscapes, culture and nature, commerce and leisure into an energetic harmony. With Chicago’s Urban Nature in hand, you’ll see those connections woven through the fabric of the city. Chappell provides new insights into such historic Chicago sites as Jens Jensen’s Garfield Park Conservatory, Frederick Law Olmsted’s Jackson Park, and Alfred Caldwell’s Lily Pond, then takes us to innovative contemporary green spaces like the North Lawndale Green Youth Farm and Millennium Park. These landscapes have become far more than places of escape and retreat for Chicago’s residents—they are fully integrated into the urban scene, an essential part of the cultural life of the modern city.     Written in an engrossing narrative style, Chicago’s Urban Nature is both a guide to new ideas about what a city can be as well as a guide to new places to visit.   Packed with maps and recommended tours as well as splendid photographs, it is the ideal guide to Chicago’s urban landscape. Sally A. Kitt Chappell is professor emerita of art history at DePaul University. A contributor to the New York Times and other periodicals, she is also the author of the award-winning Architecture and Planning of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White, 1912–1936 and Cahokia: Mirror of the Cosmos, both published by the University of Chicago Press.

Excerpt: Charles Grandison Finney (August 29, 1792) August 16, 1875) was a Presbyterian and Congregationalist figure in the Second Great Awakening. His influence during this period was enough that he has been called The Father of Modern Revivalism. Finney was known for his innovations in preaching and religious meetings such as having women pray in public meetings of mixed gender, development of the “anxious seat” (a place where those considering becoming Christians could come to receive prayer) and public censure of individuals by name in sermons and prayers. He was also known for his use of extemporaneous preaching. Born in Warren, Connecticut, Finney was the youngest of fifteen children. The son of farmers, Finney never attended college, but his six-foot three-inch stature, piercing eyes, musical skill and leadership abilities gained him recognition in his community. He studied as an apprentice to become a lawyer, but after a dramatic conversion experience and baptism into the Holy Spirit in Adams, New York, he resigned from all of his duties at his law office to attend to the call of God on his life, which was to preach the gospel. At age 29 under George Washington Gale, Finney studied to become a licensed minister in the Presbyterian Church, though he had many misgivings about the fundamental doctrines taught in that denomination. Finney was married three times in his life. In 1824, he married Lydia Root Andrews (1804-1847). In 1848 he married Elizabeth Ford Atkinson (1799-1863). In 1865 he married Rebecca Allen Rayl (1824-1907). All three of these women assisted Finney in his evangelistic efforts, accompanying him on his revival tours during their lives. Finney had six children, all by his first wife. He moved to New York City in 1832 where he p… More:

 Ghetto Tourism

Ghetto Tourism

$61.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Ghetto tourism refers to the growing popularity of tourism in ghettos. Ghetto tourism was first studied in 2005 by Michael Stephens in the cultural-criticism journal, PopMatters. Ghetto tourism includes all forms of entertainment – “gangsta rap,” video games, movies, TV, and other forms that allow consumers to traffic in the inner city without leaving home. As Stevens says, “digital media achieves more detailed simulations of reality. The quest for thrills mutates into a desire, not just to see bigger and better explosions, but to cross class and racial boundaries and experience other lifestyles.” International tourists to New York City in the 1980s led to a successful tourism boom in Harlem. By 2002, Philadelphia began offering tours of blighted inner-city neighborhoods. After Hurricane Katrina, tours were offered in flood-ravaged Lower Ninth Ward, a notoriously violent and poor section of New Orleans.

Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga

$2.98

The members of Led Zeppelin are major deities in the pantheon of rock gods. The first and heaviest of the heavy metal monsters, they violently shook the foundations of rock music and took no prisoners on the road. Their tours were legendary, their lives were exalted—and in an era well known for sex and drugs, the mighty Zeppelin set an unattainable standard of excess and mythos for any band that tried to follow them. They were power, they were fantasy, they were black magic. No band ever flew as high as Led Zeppelin or suffered so disastrous a fall. And only some of them lived to tell the tale. Hammer of the Gods is the New York Times bestselling epic saga of the hard reign of Page, Plant, Jones, and Bonham—a spellbinding, electrifying, no-holds-barred classic of rock ‘n’ roll history that has now been updated to include the continuing adventures of the band.

 Hotel: An American History

Hotel: An American History

$27.5

When George Washington embarked on his presidential tours of 1789–91, the rudimentary inns and taverns of the day suddenly seemed dismally inadequate. But within a decade, Americans had built the first hotels—large and elegant structures that boasted private bedchambers and grand public ballrooms. This book recounts the enthralling history of the hotel in America—a saga in which politicians and prostitutes, tourists and tramps, conventioneers and confidence men, celebrities and salesmen all rub elbows. Hotel explores why the hotel was invented, how its architecture developed, and the many ways it influenced the course of United States history. The volume also presents a beautiful collection of more than 120 illustrations, many in full color, of hotel life in every era. Hotel explores these topics and more:·        What it was like to sleep, eat, and socialize at a hotel in the mid-1800s·        How  hotelkeepers dealt with the illicit activities of adulterers, thieves, and violent guests·        The stories behind America’s greatest hotels, including the Waldorf-Astoria, the Plaza, the Willard, the Blackstone, and the Fairmont·        Why Confederate spies plotted to burn down thirteen hotels in New York City during the Civil War·        How the development of steamboats and locomotives  helped create a nationwide network of hotels·        How  hotels became architectural models for apartment buildings·        The pivotal role of hotels in the civil rights movement
